The Country Music Association (CMA) recently honored Chris Willman, presenting him with the prestigious CMA Media Achievement Award. Willman, Variety’s Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic, earned this significant accolade for his extensive and impactful country music journalism career. For over 40 years, Willman has been a leading voice covering the country music industry, and the surprise announcement, presented by Breakthrough Artist nominees Shaboozey and Stephen Wilson Jr. at Variety’s CMA Awards Interview Lounge, underscores the importance of the CMA Media Achievement Award in recognizing key figures and achievements within this dynamic field.

Chris Willman: A Pillar of Country Music Journalism and Recipient of the CMA Media Achievement Award

Chris Willman boasts a career spanning four decades, recognized for his insightful coverage of country music. Willman is also noted as Los Angeles’ longest-standing full-time music reporter. His work has graced many prominent publications, including Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, and the Los Angeles Times. He also penned the acclaimed book “Rednecks & Bluenecks: The Politics of Country Music,” which Stephen King even cited as a top music book. Willman has accumulated numerous journalism accolades, having won Entertainment Journalist of the Year twice and also receiving Print Journalist of the Year honors. CMA publicist members vote for the CMA Media Achievement Award winner, celebrating journalists shaping the national conversation about country music. Willman is the first of two recipients for 2025, with the CMA Media Achievement Award marking a career milestone.

Breakthrough Artists Shaboozey and Stephen Wilson Jr. Shine, Highlighting New Talent in Country Music

Shaboozey and Stephen Wilson Jr. are generating significant excitement, both nominated for Breakthrough Artist. Shaboozey offers a unique blend, his music fusing hip-hop, country, and folk sounds. His viral hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” achieved widespread success, topping both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Country Songs chart. This marks a notable milestone for Black artists in country music. Shaboozey’s career gained considerable momentum from his features on Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” album. He is originally from Woodbridge, Virginia, with parents who are Nigerian immigrants. Shaboozey’s success reflects the evolving landscape of country music and the growing appreciation for his unique sound, which aligns with the spirit of the CMA Media Achievement Award in recognizing diverse contributions.

Stephen Wilson Jr. also stands out in the genre, delivering a compelling mix of country and rock. His musical style is often called “Death Cab for Country.” Wilson Jr. comes from Seymour, Indiana, with influences including classic country and rock legends. He received a nomination for New Artist of the Year at the 2025 CMA Awards, though Zach Top ultimately won this award. Wilson Jr. also co-wrote “Took a Walk” with Shaboozey, a song featured in the film adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Long Walk.” Their live performance of the song at the CMA Awards earned a standing ovation, highlighting the exciting new talent emerging in country music, a trend often spotlighted by the CMA Media Achievement Award.

The 59th Annual CMA Awards and Industry Honors, Including the CMA Media Achievement Award

The 59th Annual CMA Awards celebrated excellence in country music, with Lainey Wilson hosting the event and securing multiple awards. Zach Top was recognized with the New Artist of the Year award. Brooks & Dunn set a new record, now holding the most CMA Awards wins with 20. Vince Gill was honored with the CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. The CMA Media Achievement Award specifically acknowledges media professionals for their significant impact on covering and promoting the genre, with CMA publicist members casting votes for this esteemed award. Chris Willman’s selection for the CMA Media Achievement Award is a testament to his lasting influence.

The Country Music Association also announced nominations for the 2025 CMA Touring Awards, presented by Strauss with Keith Urban hosting the ceremony. These awards highlight the essential behind-the-scenes professionals in country music’s live touring sector. Veteran artist manager Jim Halsey received the CMA Touring Lifetime Achievement Award. The breadth of these honors, from artist achievements to the CMA Media Achievement Award, showcases the comprehensive support the CMA provides for the entire country music industry.

A Dynamic and Evolving Music Industry Celebrated by the CMA

These recent announcements highlight a vibrant and evolving country music industry. Chris Willman’s CMA Media Achievement Award honors established journalistic integrity, while the recognition of Shaboozey and Stephen Wilson Jr. signals the rise of new, genre-bending talent. The CMA consistently celebrates diverse contributions, including artists, media professionals, and touring personnel. The ongoing country music industry news from the CMA underscores the genre’s lasting appeal and its dynamic growth, making this a significant period for country music news and accolades like the CMA Media Achievement Award.
