BigXthaPlug’s Audacious Crossover: ‘I Hope You’re Happy’ Album Redefines Genre Boundaries with Country’s Biggest Stars

Dallas-born rapper BigXthaPlug has officially made his bold foray into the country music landscape with the release of his highly anticipated album, “I Hope You’re Happy,” on Friday, August 22, 2025. This project is a testament to the artist’s expansive vision, blending his distinctive vocal style and narrative depth with the soulful essence of country music, defying conventional genre labels and garnering widespread attention from both the hip-hop and country communities alike.

The Genesis of a Crossover Project: From “Texas” to Heartbreak

Xavier Landum, known professionally as BigXthaPlug, first emerged from a challenging upbringing in Dallas, Texas, where he initially pursued a football career. However, off-field hurdles redirected his path, and a period of incarceration in solitary confinement became a pivotal turning point. It was during this time, at the age of 20 and on his son’s first birthday, that he began channeling his emotions into writing and poetry, laying the groundwork for his eventual career as a rapper. He released his debut album, Amar, in 2023, named after his son, marking the beginning of his professional journey.

The unexpected catalyst for his country pivot was his 2022 viral hit, “Texas.” What started as a playful nod to his home state quickly opened doors he hadn’t anticipated, drawing the attention of prominent country music figures. BigX revealed in a recent interview that the idea for a country project stemmed from an authentic creative impulse, not a desire to abandon his hip-hop roots. He expressed a deep-seated ambition to grow as an artist, capable of conquering diverse musical terrains rather than being confined to a single genre.

Initially, BigX admitted his perception of country music was limited to themes of “heartbreak and whiskey.” However, a profound personal experience—a difficult breakup that unfolded during the album’s creation—lent an unexpected authenticity to his exploration of the genre. This personal heartbreak resonated deeply with country’s storytelling tradition, helping him to fully embrace and complete the project. The album, originally titled “Not Just Country,” evolved into a poignant collection of songs exploring love, loss, bitterness, and resilience, reflecting the various stages of a breakup.

A Star-Studded Country Welcome

Before “I Hope You’re Happy” was even a fully realized concept, BigXthaPlug found himself embraced by the country community. Early endorsements came from industry heavy-hitters such as Luke Combs, who reportedly called BigX his favorite rapper after a Houston show, and Jelly Roll. This early support naturally led to a remarkable roster of collaborations on the album, featuring some of country music’s biggest names.

The 11-track album includes duets on nearly every song, showcasing BigX’s ability to seamlessly integrate his style with diverse voices. Collaborators include Darius Rucker on the title track, Jelly Roll on the bittersweet “Box Me Up,” Bailey Zimmerman on the highly successful single “All the Way” (which soared to the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Hot Country Songs chart), Ella Langley on “Hell At Night,” Luke Combs on “Pray Hard,” Shaboozey on the lead single “Home,” Ink on “24/7,” Thomas Rhett on “Long Nights,” and Tucker Wetmore on “About You.” Notably, an earlier collaboration with Jessie Murph, “Holy Ground,” also highlighted his genre-blending potential. BigX emphasized his selection criteria for these features, stating he looked for artists who possessed a genuine “soul,” finding a kindred spirit in Jelly Roll, whom he described as the “country version” of himself. While a collaboration with Post Malone was discussed and he spent time in the studio with the artist, it did not materialize for this particular album, though the possibility for future projects remains open. Interestingly, Morgan Wallen was initially slated to appear on “All the Way” but scheduling conflicts led to Bailey Zimmerman stepping in, a turn of events BigX now views as beneficial for both artists.

Bridging Genres: Sound and Storytelling

“I Hope You’re Happy” is a bold sonic tapestry, weaving BigXthaPlug’s signature trap energy and deep, percussive flow with country melodies and instrumentation. The result is an immersive sound that feels organic, rather than forced. BigX views his venture into country as a natural extension of his identity as an artist, asserting that creative expression should not be limited by genre constraints. As he eloquently put it, comparing it to a painter who shouldn’t be told to only paint red apples, he believes artists should be free to explore any form of music they choose.

He has often highlighted the shared foundational element between hip-hop and country music: storytelling. Both genres, at their core, excel at crafting vivid narratives that resonate deeply with listeners. This common ground allowed BigX to navigate the transition with authenticity, maintaining his unique voice and narrative approach within a new musical context. Furthermore, BigX observed a striking sense of unity within the country music community, a collaborative spirit he found particularly inspiring and welcoming compared to other genres, noting how country artists often support each other more readily.

Fan Reactions and Future Horizons

Anticipating varied reactions to his genre-bending album, BigXthaPlug expressed readiness for both praise and criticism. He confidently stated that if the music “sounds good,” the quality will transcend any preconceived notions or genre purism. Crucially, his hip-hop fanbase has shown overwhelming support, understanding that “I Hope You’re Happy” represents a creative exploration and expansion of his artistry, not a permanent shift into a “country era.” He assures fans that his distinctive voice and storytelling remain intact, regardless of the musical backdrop.

The project has already been the subject of extensive media coverage, with BigX conducting interviews with major outlets like Apple Music, Billboard, Complex, and The New York Times, where he further elaborated on his artistic philosophy. His significant cross-genre impact was formally recognized earlier this year when he received the 2025 Innovator of the Year award at the Billboard Power Players ceremony, solidifying his position as a boundary-pushing artist.

A Release Day Complication

Adding an unexpected layer to the album’s launch, BigXthaPlug faced a personal setback on its release day. Court records show that Xavier Landum was arrested overnight in Dallas on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a firearm. This development occurred shortly after he held a release party for the album and was scheduled for another promotional event at a Wingstop. While the album’s release and critical reception continue, this legal issue presents a sudden complication, casting an unforeseen shadow over what was meant to be a celebratory moment for the groundbreaking artist.

Despite this latest challenge, “I Hope You’re Happy” stands as a monumental project, successfully bridging two distinct musical worlds through BigXthaPlug’s genuine artistic vision and powerful storytelling. It not only showcases his versatility but also signals a dynamic evolution in the broader landscape of contemporary music, proving that authentic expression can indeed transcend traditional genre divides.
