Unheard Waylon Jennings Album ‘Songbird’ to Feature Rare Recordings from Creative Peak

Camila CruzCamila CruzJuly 31, 20252 Minutes read

Country music fans are set to receive a posthumous gift from the legendary Waylon Jennings, with the announcement of a previously unheard album titled ‘Songbird.’ Scheduled for release on October 3, 2025, via Son of Jessi/Thirty Tigers, this collection promises to unveil a significant cache of material from one of the genre’s most iconic figures. The release marks the first new album from Jennings since his passing, offering a profound connection to his artistic legacy.

A Glimpse into Jennings’ Creative Prime

‘Songbird’ is the inaugural release in a planned series of three forthcoming albums, all meticulously compiled from recordings made during the prolific period between 1973 and 1984. This era is widely considered to be Jennings’ creative peak, a time when his distinctive outlaw country sound solidified and resonated deeply with audiences worldwide. The recordings capture Jennings at the height of his powers, backed by his celebrated band, The Waylors. Key members featured on these tracks include the foundational drummer Richie Albright and the influential steel guitarist Ralph Mooney, whose contributions were integral to the outlaw sound that defined Jennings’ career.

The anticipation surrounding ‘Songbird’ is further amplified by the inclusion of special guest artists who shared studio time with Jennings during these sessions. Among the notable contributors are fellow musical pioneer Tony Joe White, known for his swamp rock and bluesy country stylings, and Jennings’ own wife, Jessi Colter, a significant artist in her own right and a key figure in the outlaw movement. The collaboration of these artists promises to enrich the sonic landscape of the album, providing a unique and intimate look at Jennings’ creative process and his musical relationships.

Title Track and Visual Companion

To herald the album’s arrival, the title track, a compelling cover of Fleetwood Mac’s poignant ballad ‘Songbird,’ is now available to the public. This rendition offers listeners an early opportunity to experience the unearthed material and to hear Jennings interpret a classic song through his inimitable country lens. Complementing the release of the track, a new visualizer has been launched on YouTube, providing a visual dimension to the auditory experience and further engaging fans with this significant release.

The ‘Songbird’ album represents more than just a collection of unreleased songs; it is a testament to Waylon Jennings’ enduring impact on country music. The unearthed recordings from 1973 to 1984 offer a rare opportunity to immerse oneself in the music created during a pivotal chapter of his career. The involvement of The Waylors, particularly Albright and Mooney, ensures an authentic representation of the sound that Jennings championed, while the presence of guest artists like Tony Joe White and Jessi Colter adds layers of historical and artistic significance. This project, curated from the archives, is poised to be a landmark event for fans and historians of country music, celebrating the spirit and artistry of Waylon Jennings for generations to come.
