Country Music Giants and Americana Favorites Join Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp for Farm Aid’s 40th Anniversary

Kenji TanakaKenji TanakaJuly 29, 20252 Minutes read

The 40th-anniversary celebration of Farm Aid is set to be a landmark event, with a star-studded lineup featuring some of country and Americana music’s most beloved artists. Scheduled for September 20 in Minneapolis, the concert will showcase a diverse range of talent dedicated to supporting family farmers.

Kenny Chesney and Wynonna Judd Lead New Wave of Performers

Adding significant star power to the already impressive roster, Kenny Chesney and Wynonna Judd are among the newly announced performers for Farm Aid 40. Chesney, a four-time participant in the annual benefit concert, has consistently demonstrated his commitment to the cause, generously donating his travel and performances to raise awareness and much-needed funds for family farmers. This appearance in Minneapolis marks a significant moment in Chesney’s 2025 schedule, as it is his only announced live performance outside of his recently concluded, highly successful residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Pioneering artist Wynonna Judd, a true icon of country music, will also grace the Farm Aid stage. With a career marked by numerous No. 1 singles and a prestigious induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Judd brings a wealth of experience and a devoted fanbase to the event. Her participation underscores the broad appeal and enduring relevance of Farm Aid’s mission.

Steve Earle Returns, Highlighting Long-Standing Support

Long-time Farm Aid advocate Steve Earle is also set to perform, marking his ninth appearance since the inception of the festival in 1985. Earle, who was recently inducted into the Grand Ole Opry this year, has been a consistent and passionate voice for agricultural issues. His recurring presence at Farm Aid highlights a deep, personal connection to the organization’s goals and a continued dedication to the family farming community.

Foundation of Icons: Nelson, Young, and Mellencamp

These newly announced artists join an already formidable lineup of Farm Aid board members and legendary musicians. Co-founders Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp, along with Neil Young, will anchor the event. Neil Young will perform with his band, The Chrome Hearts. John Mellencamp’s participation in Farm Aid 40 is particularly noteworthy, as it represents his only scheduled live performance of the year.

Farm Aid’s enduring mission, to keep family farmers on the land, is further bolstered by the involvement of other key board members Dave Matthews and Margo Price. Dave Matthews is slated to perform a special duo set with long-time collaborator Tim Reynolds, promising an intimate and powerful musical experience.

A Rich Tapestry of Musical Talent

The concert promises a rich tapestry of musical styles, catering to a wide audience. In addition to the headline acts, the lineup includes a compelling array of talent such as bluegrass virtuoso Billy Strings, the soulful sounds of Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, and the folk-rock energy of Trampled by Turtles. The critically acclaimed Waxahatchee, Black Pumas frontman Eric Burton, Jesse Welles, and Madeline Edwards will also be taking the stage. Adding a unique cultural dimension, the Wisdom Indian Dancers will offer a traditional performance, enriching the festival’s diverse offerings.

Minneapolis Gears Up for a Day of Music and Advocacy

As Minneapolis prepares to host this significant milestone, Farm Aid 40 is poised to be more than just a concert. It is a powerful statement of solidarity with American farmers, a celebration of resilience, and a vital platform for advocating for policies that support sustainable agriculture and rural communities. The collective efforts of these artists, from country music legends to rising Americana stars, aim to bring critical attention to the challenges faced by family farmers across the nation, ensuring their voices are heard and their contributions are valued.
