Brad Cox Pivots from Country Roots with Emotionally Unfiltered ‘Endemic Intelligence’

Camila CruzCamila CruzJuly 31, 20252 Minutes read

Australian artist Brad Cox is charting a new sonic course with his highly anticipated fourth studio album, ‘Endemic Intelligence in Multiple Dimensions,’ slated for release on September 26th via Warner Music Australia. This upcoming collection marks a significant departure from the country music sound that has defined his earlier work, as Cox aims to explore broader themes and a more introspective musical landscape.

A Sonic Evolution

In a candid conversation with Rolling Stone Australia, Cox, now 30, described the new album as a deliberate step away from his established country genre. He characterizes the evolving sound as “country adjacent” and “emotionally unguarded,” signaling a willingness to push creative boundaries. This shift reflects a maturing perspective, with Cox expressing a desire to engage with contemporary societal issues rather than adhering to the more traditional country music tropes of “driving down a dirt road and drinking a cold beer.” He feels a greater understanding of the world’s priorities has influenced his songwriting, allowing him to tackle more pressing subjects.

Collaboration and Creative Partnerships

The creation of ‘Endemic Intelligence in Multiple Dimensions’ was a deeply collaborative process, with Cox working closely with producer and A&R representative Chris Collins. Cox found this partnership to be “unexpectedly fruitful,” highlighting a shared vision that benefited the album’s distinctive sound. The conceptualization of the album’s title and artwork was a joint effort with designer Connor Dewhurst. The striking visual, which features a surreal beach scene with a Kraken toy, complements the album’s exploratory themes.

Cox also emphasized the integral role of his band in the album’s realization. He noted that his bandmates are far more than just session musicians, contributing significantly to the creative fabric of the project. Further enriching the album’s musical tapestry is a guest appearance from Randy Houser on the track “The High Cost Of Living.” Cox spoke with genuine warmth about his appreciation for producer Chris Collins, praising his kindness and considerable talent, which proved invaluable throughout the recording sessions.

Thematic Depth and Tracklist

‘Endemic Intelligence in Multiple Dimensions’ delves into subjects that resonate with Cox’s current outlook on life and society. By moving beyond conventional genre narratives, he aims to connect with listeners on a more profound level, addressing topics such as the critical issue of housing affordability. This thematic shift underscores Cox’s evolution as an artist who is not only growing in his craft but also in his engagement with the world around him.

The album’s tracklist features a compelling array of song titles that hint at the diverse emotional and thematic territory explored within the record. Among the featured songs are “Sunset Psalm,” “I’m a Boxer,” and “Everything I’ve Got.” These titles suggest a journey through introspection, personal struggle, and a comprehensive laying bare of his current artistic state, promising a listening experience that is both thoughtful and impactful.

A New Chapter for Brad Cox

With ‘Endemic Intelligence in Multiple Dimensions,’ Brad Cox is poised to introduce a new era in his musical career. By embracing a more daring and uninhibited approach to songwriting and production, he is not only challenging his own artistic boundaries but also inviting his audience to join him on a journey that explores the complexities of modern life. The album represents a bold statement of artistic intent, signaling that one of Australian country music’s brightest stars is ready to shine in new and unexpected directions.
