Australian Country Music Industry Surges Past $1 Billion Mark, Fueled by Live Performance Boom and Gen Z Engagement

Shanice WilliamsShanice WilliamsSeptember 10, 20254 Minutes read

The Australian country music industry has officially crossed the A$1 billion threshold, marking an unprecedented boom driven by a significant surge in live performance revenue and a dramatic increase in engagement from younger audiences. New research from the Country Music Association of Australia (CMAA), detailed in its ‘Valuing Australian Country Music 2025’ report, indicates the sector generated an astounding A$1.09 billion in the 2024/25 financial year. This figure represents a remarkable 77% increase from the A$619 million recorded in 2019, signaling a robust recovery and expansion for the genre of Australian country music.

Live Performance Takes Center Stage in Australian Country Music

A major catalyst for this economic success is the extraordinary growth in live country music. Revenue from live performances – encompassing festivals, concerts, and smaller venue gigs – reached A$560 million, accounting for 51% of the industry’s total revenue. This represents a substantial 93% jump compared to 2019 figures. The revitalized live scene has not only boosted financial returns but also created significant employment opportunities, generating 2,086 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) jobs within the sector. The report highlights the sheer scale of fan participation, with 137 dedicated country music festivals attracting 684,000 patrons and 49 major concerts drawing an additional 490,000 fans. Furthermore, 542 small venues hosted over 16,000 gigs, pulling in 1.87 million attendees, showcasing the vibrant nature of live music Australia.

Australia’s Growing Global Footprint in Australian Country Music

While country music is experiencing a global resurgence, Australia has firmly cemented its position as a powerhouse market. The nation now stands as the world’s third-largest and fastest-growing country music market, trailing only the United States and Canada. This growth is further evidenced by streaming trends; Spotify reported an 115% increase in country music streams in Australia since 2023, with the country recording the highest percentage (74%) of new country listeners globally. This indicates a broad and expanding appetite for the genre across the Australian population, contributing to the overall music economy.

The Gen Z Effect: A New Generation Discovers Australian Country Music

A significant driving force behind this country music renaissance is the increasing engagement from Generation Z (Gen Z) audiences. The ‘Step Into Country’ report by Live Nation reveals that Gen Z, particularly in metropolitan areas, is actively discovering and embracing country music through mainstream channels, social media, and genre-bending collaborations. A remarkable 68% of Gen Z listeners reported consuming more country music than ever before, a trend amplified by artists crossing over into pop, rock, and hip-hop genres. Platforms like TikTok have played a crucial role, with the #CountryMusic hashtag garnering 196 million views in Australia over the past year. This younger demographic’s embrace of the genre has shifted perceptions, moving country music from a niche or nostalgic category to one perceived as ‘on the rise,’ ‘diverse,’ and ‘progressive,’ highlighting the evolving landscape of the country music industry.

Live Nation Witnesses Unprecedented Ticket Sales Surge for Australian Country Music

Live Nation Australia has provided compelling data illustrating the dramatic shift in consumer demand. The company has recorded a staggering 746% increase in country music ticket purchases since 2019, with the number of country shows booked for the 2024-2025 period nearly five times higher than in previous years. This surge coincides with major tours by international stars such as Luke Combs, whose six sold-out stadium shows marked a historic first for a country act in Australia, and Chris Stapleton’s highly successful arena run. The increased booking of country music acts underscores the genre’s growing commercial viability and appeal to a wider audience, contributing to music industry growth.

Broader Industry Impact and Economic Contribution of Australian Country Music

The economic impact of this country music boom extends beyond ticket sales and artist revenues. The ‘Valuing Australian Country Music 2025’ report, supported by funding from Create NSW and Creative Australia, not only highlights financial gains but also the genre’s cultural significance. Festivals alone generated A$70.5 million in box office revenue in 2024/25, a 112% increase from 2019, with major country music festivals like CMC Rocks injecting millions into local economies. The CMAA’s research, led by Chair Dobe Newton with a team from JMC Academy and Collarts, also noted increased songwriting participation, with 16% of APRA writers identifying as ‘country,’ up from 11% in 2019, showcasing the health of the Australian music market.

Evolving Sounds and Future Prospects for Australian Country Music

While the economic news is overwhelmingly positive, the report also flags a note of caution. Despite the surge in listenership, Australian country artists are facing challenges in achieving prominent chart representation, with the majority of popular content being international. This underscores the ongoing need to support and promote local artists to ensure Australian voices continue to tell Australian stories within the genre of Australian country music. The genre’s evolution, characterized by genre-bending collaborations and the strong influence of social media, suggests that country music is poised for continued innovation and growth. The increasing embrace by Gen Z and the expansion into new markets indicate that the future of country music is bright and increasingly diverse, extending its reach far beyond its traditional roots. This sustained momentum positions the Australian country music industry for further expansion and influence on the global stage, driving significant music revenue.
